The CIoD Nigeria Academy is a key Strategic Business Unit (SBU) of the Institute, responsible for the development, delivery, and assessment of the Institute’s Director Development Programmes. It operates through two specialised units: the Training & Capacity Development Unit and the Examinations & Certifications Unit.
Through its Training & Capacity Development Unit, the Academy delivers world-class, future-focused programmes that address the evolving governance and leadership needs of boards, senior executives, and organisations across multiple sectors. In alignment with the Institute’s Chartered status, the Academy is further mandated to produce Chartered Directors through rigorous examination and certification processes that uphold the highest professional standards.
As an income-generating SBU, the Academy is mandated to make significant annual contributions to the Institute’s financial performance.
Objectives of the CIoD Nigeria Academy
- Develop, deliver & assess the Institute’s Director Development Programmes.
- Strengthen local and international partnerships to enhance programme relevance and global credibility.
- Produce Chartered Directors through a structured examination and certification process.

Strategic & Leadership-focused
Effective boards regularly review not just skills and experience, but also how well members work together. CIoD Nigeria supports this process through Director Development Services designed to strengthen board capability, dynamics, and overall effectiveness.
Programmes are delivered by experienced facilitators who have operated at board level across private, public, and not-for-profit organisations. Each programme is tailored to an organisation’s specific needs, based on a detailed brief and clear outcomes, often uncovering insights that add extra value.
Courses run from one to three days and are designed from a director’s perspective. They offer practical learning, minimal disruption to busy schedules, and opportunities to connect with other directors while building stronger, more effective boards.
