The Chartered Institute of Directors (CIoD) Nigeria recently concluded two significant events aimed at strengthening its governance framework and shaping the future direction of the Institute: the Governing Council Induction Programme held on February 20, 2025, and the 2025 Governing Council Strategy Retreat held on February 21–22, 2025 at the Lagos Oriental Hotel VI, Lagos. These events, which brought together key stakeholders in the governance and strategic development of the Institute, were vital in equipping the leadership with the tools and knowledge necessary to drive the Institute’s mission forward.
Governing Council Induction Programme: Strengthening Governance Compliance
The Governing Council Induction Programme marked an important milestone as it welcomed newly elected and appointed representatives into the Institute’s governing body. Held on February 20, 2025, the programme aimed to familiarize members with the governance structure, operational processes, and strategic direction of the Institute.
The session featured presentations on critical topics such as understanding board dynamics, the CIoD strategy and business overview, and a hands-on demonstration of the Board Cloud (Board Portal), which will streamline Council meetings and improve operational efficiency.
The programme was launched with opening remarks from the President, Alhaji Tijjani M. Borodo, who highlighted the importance of corporate governance compliance in strengthening CIoD’s impact. The sessions covered various key areas, including the Institute’s ethos and brand identity, a review of regulations, and the importance of embracing strategic leadership.
The induction proved to be a resounding success, providing Council members with the essential tools to enhance their effectiveness and contributions toward achieving CIoD’s overarching goals.
2025 Governing Council Strategy Retreat: Shaping the Future of CIoD
A day after the induction programme, the Governing Council came together for the 2025 Strategy Retreat. Under the theme “Shaping the Future of CIoD’s Impact and Relevance Beyond the Bottom Line,” the retreat was designed to reflect on past achievements and challenges and strategize the Institute’s direction for the next five years (2025–2029).
The event brought together 35 participants, including members of the Governing Council, executive management, and senior leadership, with both onsite and online participation. Key highlights of the retreat included a strategic review of the CIoD’s vision, as well as discussions surrounding emerging trends in governance and business leadership.
Key Presentations:
• Guest Speaker Dr. Muda Yusuf (Former DG, LCCI & CEO, Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise) provided valuable insights on the broader business environment.
• The Secretariat Report by Mr. Dele Alimi, CIoD's Director General/CEO, highlighted the status of the 5-Year Strategic Plan and updates on the Charter Transition Roadmap.
The retreat also included presentations on CIoD’s Rebranding Project and breakout group sessions focused on pivotal areas such as: Leveraging Technology (AI) and ESG Initiatives and Advocacy, Collaboration, and Global Partnerships
Key Outcomes of the Retreat:
• The development of the 2025–2029 Strategic Plan, which aims to align CIoD’s initiatives with evolving business dynamics and post-charter realities.
• A focus on leveraging AI and ESG initiatives for better governance, automation, and environmental responsibility.
• The expansion of advocacy efforts to influence government policies and enhance corporate governance standards, while exploring global partnerships for professional development.
• Strategies to boost membership growth and develop CIoD’s branches nationwide.
The retreat concluded with a closing address by the President, Alhaji Tijjani M. Borodo, who expressed his gratitude for the active participation of Council members and stakeholders. The feedback gathered during the retreat will shape the Institute’s next steps in ensuring its leadership in corporate governance and sustainability.
